Collagen is one of the primary proteins in our bodies, 30% of our bodies protein is collagen. Our bodies break down the collagen proteins into amino acids which are the building blocks for all our connective tissue, skin, tendons, ligaments, bones and cartilage, it is the framework of our bodies and glues us together. It’s also found in our organs blood vessels and intestinal lining. As we age we make less natural collagen and collagen breaks down more quickly as we age so we lose more than we make. To boost our bodies natural production of collagen we should all eat a varied Mediterranean type diet with lots of good quality animal and vegetable protein, eggs, leafy greens, legumes, garlic, nuts and seeds and berries. Bone broth is an excellent source. Vitamin C helps our bodies to synthesise natural collagen. Do we need to supplement collagen? The reality is that every bodies requirements for any supplements will vary depending on diet, health history and known medical conditions. Supplementing between 2.5g and 20g per day has been shown to be a safe and effective dose. We suggest taking 5g a day to start with. With any new supplement it’s wise to start at the lower end of the dosage spectrum to gauge your bodies response and increase slowly. Always consult your doctor before taking supplements if you are taking medication for any contraindications.
